The 9th European Medical and Biological Engineering Conference, EMBEC 2024 – Europe’s Innovation Hub, held from June 9–13, 2024, in the charming coastal town of Portorož, Slovenia, marked another milestone in the advancement of biomedical engineering across Europe and beyond. EMBEC, as a flagship regional event, has always been a space for exchanging new ideas, presenting innovative research, and building strong collaborations. This year’s edition did not disappoint—it gathered researchers, clinicians, engineers, and industry leaders in an environment that combined high-level scientific exchange with the relaxing atmosphere of Slovenia’s Adriatic coast.
What made EMBEC 2024 particularly special was its strong interdisciplinary spirit. Sessions spanned topics from bioinformatics, medical imaging, and neural engineering to digital health and clinical engineering applications. The diversity of presentations highlighted how biomedical engineering is no longer confined to isolated domains but has become a key driver in reshaping healthcare delivery and innovation across Europe. Poster sessions and workshops encouraged active engagement, with younger researchers and students finding an inclusive platform to showcase their work and gain visibility within the international community.
Another strength of EMBEC 2024 was the emphasis on translating academic research into clinical practice and industrial application. Roundtables with healthcare technology managers and policymakers provided fresh perspectives on how biomedical engineering can directly impact healthcare systems, improve patient safety, and enhance medical technology management at the regional and global levels. This aligns perfectly with IFMBE’s mission of bridging science, practice, and innovation to advance health worldwide.

Innovation and Collaboration on Europe’s Adriatic Coast
The International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) once again played a pivotal role in supporting and promoting EMBEC 2024. As the umbrella organization connecting global biomedical engineering communities, IFMBE ensured that the conference not only served European participants but also welcomed international voices, fostering a sense of global belonging. Through its endorsement and active participation, IFMBE reinforced its commitment to advancing biomedical engineering by creating opportunities for cross-regional collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Finally, Portorož itself provided the perfect backdrop for the event. The coastal town, with its mix of historic charm and modern facilities, offered participants both inspiration and relaxation. Social events by the sea added a warm and collegial dimension to the scientific program, reminding us that human connections are as important as technical knowledge when it comes to building the future of biomedical engineering.
In sum, EMBEC 2024 was more than a conference—it was a vibrant meeting point where science, innovation, and community came together. With IFMBE’s continued support, the European and global biomedical engineering community is well-positioned to address tomorrow’s healthcare challenges with creativity, inclusivity, and impact.
